Our TY Local History students visited James Stephens Military Barracks, where Ireland’s military past was brought vividly to life through remarkable artefacts and expert storytelling.
Students viewed a ceremonial sword presented by the American government to the Irish Guard of Honour at President John F. Kennedy’s burial, alongside WWII Swedish paratrooper rifles, WWI German anti-tank rifles, and uniforms from the Irish War of Independence. These objects provided powerful insight into Ireland’s connections to wider global conflicts and its own revolutionary history.
We extend sincere thanks to Mr Jim O’Keeffe, Museum Curator at James Stephens Barracks, who shared fascinating stories of uncovering artefacts beneath floorboards during renovation work and who allowed students, under careful supervision, to handle historical firearms and equipment. This rare hands-on experience fully immersed students in the past and will not be forgotten.
Our thanks also go to Lt O’Dwyer, Logistics Officer of the 3rd Infantry Battalion, for planning and facilitating an outstanding educational visit that greatly enriched our TY Local History programme.
