At CBS Secondary School Kilkenny, we celebrate all our students and take great pride in their successes long after they have left to take their place in the world. The unique sense of a continued belonging to our school community is a part of life here which we foster and cherish.

  • Sean Maguire, Irish International Footballer

    Sean plays for English Championship club Coventry City and made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland against Moldova in 2017, scoring his first international goal in a man of the match performance, as part of a 3-1 victory over New Zealand in Nov 2019.

  • Paddy Deegan, Kilkenny Hurler

    “Paddy is a player who wouldn’t come off unless he couldn’t walk. His heart is huge and his bravery is everything.”

    Paddy plays senior inter-county hurling with Kilkenny, where he is a lynchpin of the current side with whom he has won one National League and two Leinster titles to go with the pair of Leinster Senior Colleges titles which he won with CBS Kilkenny in 2013 & 2014.

  • Tim MacGabhann, Novelist & Writer

    Tim has reported from all over Latin America for outlets including Esquire, Thomson Reuters, Al Jazeera, and The Washington Post. His novels Call Him Mine and How to be Nowhere capture the dark underworld of Mexico’s drug cartels.

    Tim lives in Mexico City and is a past winner of The CBS Kilkenny / Francis MacManus Short-Story Competition, a competition on which he has also kindly served as a judge.

  • Ronan Kavanagh, Head of Academy Performance Nottingham Forest FC & Sports Scientist Wales FA

    Ronan has had a meteoric rise in this exciting field, enjoying spells with Stat Sports in Dundalk, where he worked with Leinster and Ulster, England’s U20 rugby side, QPR, Galatasaray, Preston North End and Burnley before joining Wales FA and Premier League side Nottingham Forest where he currently works as Head of Academy Performance.

  • Alan Hoban, Technical Officer, School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Science, UCD

    Alan works as a technical officer in the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, UCD where he conducts research in Anatomy, Histology and Neuroscience.

    He received considerable international acclaim after showing, for the first time, that gut bacteria have a direct physical effect on the brain. This may have implications for treating demyelinating (nerve de-coating) disorders like multiple sclerosis because it shows bacteria can even influence brain function and behaviour.

  • Francis MacManus, Novelist & Writer 8 Mar 1909 – 27 Nov 1965

    Francis was an Irish novelist and broadcaster. He joined the staff of Radio Éireann (precursor to RTÉ, the Irish national broadcasting entity) in 1948 as Director of Features.

    His trilogy, set in Penal times and concerning the life of the Gaelic poet Donncha Rua Mac Conmara, comprises the novels Stand and Give Challenge (1934), Candle for the Proud (1936) and Men Withering (1939).

    The RTÉ Francis MacManus Short Story Award was established in his memory in 1985, and our own award was inaugurated in his honour in 2005.

  • David Morris, Professional Snooker Player

    David has been Irish champion at every level, winning the overall National Championship from 2004 to 2006 (becoming the youngest ever winner in 2004). He turned professional in 2006 and competed on the professional tour with distinction for the next decade.

  • Conor O'Loughlin, Humanitarian Coordinator, Trocaire

    Conor is the Humanitarian Coordinator with Trócaire and has coordinated aid missions throughout the world. He is the son of Tom & Breda O’Loughlin, who both taught with distinction in  CBS Secondary School Kilkenny for many years.

  • David Beirne, CEO, Whitfield Clinic, Waterford

    David is CEO of the Whitfield Clinic and Private Hospital in Waterford. As one of the South-East’s leading medical facilities, it boasts more than 60 consultants, 52 private in-patient beds and 24 outpatient beds, generating between €50 and €60 million in the region every year.

  • Colonel Dan Bryan, Director of Military Intelligence 1900–1985

    Dan was an officer in the Irish Army and Director of Military Intelligence G2 (the Irish Army’s intelligence section) during World War II. In 1952, he was appointed Commandant of the Irish Military College. Dan is commemorated annually through The Dan Bryan History Award, which is presented for excellence in Historical Studies at Senior Cycle.

  • Jim Langton, Kilkenny Hurler, 18 Jan 1918 – 18 Apr 1987

    Jim was a member of our Senior Colleges Hurling team which made history by winning the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship title for the first time in 1935.

    He would go on to play with the Kilkenny Senior Hurling team from 1939 until 1954. His inclusion on the GAA Hurling Team of the Millennium marks him out as one of the greatest players of all time.

  • Peter De Loughrey, Revolutionary, Politician 4 Feb 1868 – 23 Oct 1931

    Peter fought in the 1916 rising and was subsequently jailed in Lincoln Prison along with Sean Milroy, Sean McGarry and Eamon de Valera.

    It was Peter who famously cut the key that would lead to their daring escape, reunion with Michael Collins and Harry Boland and return to Ireland at such an important moment in Irish history.

    Peter would later fight in the War of Independence, serve as a member of both Kilkenny Council & Kilkenny Corporation, as Mayor of Kilkenny and as a T.D. In 1925, he brought the Black Abbey bell back from the Market House at Dunlavin Estate where it had been used to summon the workers on the estate.

  • Gary Murphy, Professional Golfer

    Gary won the Irish Amateur Closed Championship in 1992. He turned professional in 1995. He won the Asian Tour qualifying school in 1997 and played two seasons on that tour.

    He won his European Tour card in 1999. Gary won the Azores Open in 2005 and writes a regular golf column for The Irish Mirror and regularly contributes to Sky Sports golf coverage.

  • John Bradley, Archaeologist, 11 Jan 1954 – 7 Nov 2014

    John was one of the foremost archaeologists in the country, specialising in the built environment of Irish towns. He lectured at UCD and gave courses at UCG, before moving to Maynooth’s History department in 1996.

    He has been described, in the newsletter of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, as “the first and foremost Irish medieval archaeologist and urban historian.” The Kilkenny Archaeological Society, of which he was a member, holds an annual conference in his memory.

  • Ian Dowling, Irish International Rugby Player

    Ian played rugby with Kilkenny RFC and for our Leinster Senior Cup team.

    He won an AIB League medal with Shannon RFC before joining Munster, with whom he won two European Rugby Cups in 2006 and 2008, as well as representing Ireland with the national rugby league team and Ireland A team.

  • Mikey Butler, Kilkenny Hurler

    Mikey has represented Kilkenny at every age group, winning All-Ireland titles at Minor and U-21 Level. He was awarded Young Hurler of the Year in 2022 and was named on the All-Star Team 2022.

  • Kieran Cuddihy, National Broadcaster

    A journalist of national standing, Kieran presents The Hard Shoulder on Newstalk interviewing national and International figures across a range of political and current affairs issues.

  • Huw Lawlor, Kilkenny Hurler

    Huw plays senior inter-county hurling with Kilkenny and has been a mainstay of the side in recent years. He has won one All-Star Award and two Leinster titles to add to the Leinster Senior Colleges title which he won with CBS Kilkenny 2014.

  • Mark Power, Golfer

    Mark is a 2021 Walker Cup member for Team Great Britain/Ireland, a two-time winner of the Irish Open Boys Championship (2016, 2017) and a semi-finalist at the British Boys’ Championship 2018.

    He competed at the 2016 European Young Masters, is three-time winner of Irish Boys Order of Merit (2016, 2017, 2018) and represented Ireland on Irish Boys U16 & U18 teams, captaining the team in 2017.

  • Ross Walsh, DJ & Music Producer

    Ross first came to prominence in 2016 when he sampled an Irish-language poem from his Leaving Cert course. Since then Ross, aka DJ Welshy, has enjoyed a string of hits amassing over 40 million streams.

    He quickly attracted attention from music heavy weights ranging from “Kygo” to “The Chainsmokers”, which firmly established him as one of Ireland’s top rising DJs. His hit, All-Day, was the undoubted song of Summer 2022.
