TY History Students Explore Ireland’s Past on Dublin Visit

April 7, 2025

Our Transition Year History students visited An Garda Síochána Memorial Garden, Dublin Castle and the Pearse Museum, helping them explore the layers of Ireland’s past.

The Garda Memorial Garden honours members of An Garda Síochána who lost their lives in the service of the State. The striking design, featuring radiating stone rings and a glass shard piercing a granite wall, reflects the suddenness of loss and the fragility of life. The garden provided a space for thoughtful reflection on the role of public service and remembrance.

At Dublin Castle, originally established in 1204 as a medieval fortress, students examined its transformation into the centre of British administration in Ireland until 1922. They explored the Medieval Tower, one of the oldest structures in the city, and discussed the castle’s place in key events such as the 1916 Rising and presidential inaugurations in modern Ireland.

The Pearse Museum in St. Enda’s Park revealed a deeper understanding of Patrick Pearse, a central figure in the 1916 Rising. Set in the former St. Enda’s School, which Pearse founded in 1910, the museum offered insights into his educational ideals and nationalist vision, bringing this period of history to life in a vivid and personal way.
